Four deaths reported due to earthquake in Chiapas, Mexico

Mexico, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) Four deaths and about three thousand homes with serios damage make up the balance posted until today because of the earthquake of 6.9 degrees on Ritcher scale which shook on Monday several Mexican states.

According to official sources, the four deaths were reported in the municipalities of Huixtla, Mapastepec and Cacahotan, all within the federal state of Chiapas, where most of the damage occurred.

The Institute of Civil Protection speeds up the census of the affected families to deliver soon the technical assessment to federal authority and comply with the protocols of the National Disaster Fund in order to channel resources of support.

According to the report of this agency, in 22 municipalities of Chiapas there is an average of serious or partial damage in nine thousand homes, 46 schools and government buildings, as well as in seven road sections.

Meanwhile, the local governor, Manuel Velasco, said that the state Civil Protection Committee is performing constant monitoring and surveillance tasks in case of any eventuality due to the continuing aftershocks recorded in the last hours, with magnitudes from 3.5 to 4.5 degrees.

Velasco said that his administration is coordinating the deployment of humanitarian support with the Interior Minister, Miguel Angel Osorio, and will continue visiting the different regions affected.

The earthquake, that also hit several areas of the neighboring Guatemala, was registered yesterday at 06:23 local time 35 km southwest of Tapachula, Chiapas.
