Heavy Snow Forces to Cancel Hundreds of Flights in Europe

Brussels, Jan 21 (Prensa Latina) Snowfall affecting several European nations on Monday caused flight cancellations in Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, and the closure of roads and disruption of rail services.

Zaventem International airport in Brussels, warned on its website of possible flight delays due to the tasks of aircraft deicing and snow removal of the runways.

Halfway through the day, flights from Rome, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Prague and the German cities of Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg, and the British Birmingham and London had been canceled.

The snowstorm forced the cancellation of a dozen flights between Spanish airport of Barajas (Madrid) and French Charles de Gaulle, the British Heathrow and German Frankfurt.

In Germany, the international airports of Frankfurt and Munich, the largest in the country, announced the suspension of more than 300 flights due to the big freeze suffered by the first and heavy snow that have affected the second in the last 24 hours.

Hundreds of flights were suspended preventively at the two main airports in Paris, Charles de Gaulle and Orly, at the announcement of a new front with snow, which also caused multiple road traffic restrictions.

About 130 trips were canceled also in Heathrow, the busiest airport in the UK and the one with more air traffic in Europe, due to poor visibility, while other British terminals also have affectations.

According to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, 300 of the 900 flights scheduled today at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport were suspended, and the airline KLM reported on its Web Site disruption of most trips to Europe.

The company Eurostar, which connects high-speed rail in the UK with France and Belgium, annulled some of their connections, while the consortium Thalys warned that rail traffic could be disrupted between cities like Brussels, Paris and the German city of Cologne.

According to weather forecasts, the cold snap affecting the region from January 12 will continue until later this month, with further decreases in temperature.
