Alarm in Southern Brazil for Increased Dengue Fever Cases

Brasilia, Jan 21 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian health authorities adopted today emergency measures in the southern state of Mato Grosso do Sul due to the epidemic of dengue fever registered in that territory, after the rains of recent weeks.

So far 7,697cases were reported, but every day there are more than 600 patients, which prompted the health ministry to intensify the campaign to eliminate the mosquito Aedes aegypti, stressed sources of Campo Grande’s mayor, capital of this territory.

It is also expected the hiring of 160 additional health workers and step up work of debris removal and street cleaning in order to eradicate mosquito nests.

The mayor, Alcides Bernal, confirmed the seriousness of the situation and announced thay work to combat the Aedes aegypti and prevent the deaths.

Apart from Campo Grande, in the neighboring city of Vitoria, in the state of Espirito Santo, it was reported an increase in dengue cases with more than 500,000 patients in this month.

So far, according to federal authorities, two people have died in the country because of dengue fever.
