Geneva, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) Dengue fever is the fastest spreading tropical illness worldwide, and its incidence has multiplied by 30 in the past 50 years, according to a report from the World Health Organization.

At least 2 million cases were registered yearly in 100 countries, mainly in Asia, Africa and Latin America, with 5,000 to 6,000 deaths reported, adds the document.

However, the real number of people infected is estimated to be higher, as the illness have spread to all continents, said WHO expert Raman Velayudhan.

The dengue fever threat exists in the entire planet, said Velayudhan in a press conference to present the UN Second Global Report on Neglected Tropical Diseases.
