Washington, Dec 26 (Prensa Latina) A group of scientists found in the permanently frozen Siberian soil bacteria capable to survive in an environment like that of Planet Mars, according to the specialized magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

This find occurred in the Taymyr Peninsula, in northern Siberia, where experts of the University of Florida drilled 40 mt deep into the frozen soil and sieved the sand, finding bacteria of the carnobacterium genus, one of which was revived in 2005 after having been frozen for 300,000 years.

The scientists led by Wayne L. Nicholson managed to multiply them in labs and submit them to an environment similar to that in Mars and were surprised for their successfully passing the test, thus further encouraging astrobiologists to find life beyond Planet Earth.
