Washington, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) Asteroid Toutatis will pass relatively close to Earth on Wednesday December 12, however, experts say there is no risk of impact.

The five-kilometer-diameter rock will be about 6.9 million kilometers away from our planet and it is not the first time it has passed so close to the Earth given that it repeats the action every four years around this time of the year.

On previous occasions, such as in 2004, the asteroid passed the Earth even more closely.

Toutatis was discovered by C. Pollas in Caussols (France) in 1989. Since then, it has been seen and studied in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008.

Researchers are preparing for this new visit and hope to get higher definition images thanks to powerful new telescopes.

Toutatis’  next visit to the Earth will take place at the end of 2016 and early 2017.
